What is Bits for Bytes

Bits for Bytes is a scholarship program that will benefit Greenwood Independent School in the Western Cape province of South Africa. World Shoppe works with several artisan groups from the Western Cape province and this is just one of the ways we hope to give back to the communities in which our artisans work and live.

Greenwood is located near Plettenberg Bay and currently provides co-educational facilities for 123 children. Activities include the promotion of social skills, emotional and spiritual growth, physical coordination and cognitive preparation.

Greenwood's approach to teaching is designed to develop self-esteem and provide the children with confidence in their knowledge and strength to prepare them for the future. Students range from 21 months to 13 years.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 over 12 months (beginning September 1, 2010) to fund two young girls’ tuition as well as 4 new computers to double the amount the school currently has available for all of the students and teachers. Chicago Fair Trade is our fiscal agent (so all donations will be sent to Chicago Fair Trade and donated to the school through Chicago Fair Trade). All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Who Will Benefit from Bits for Bytes

One of the girls is in Grade 3 and the other is in Grade 5. Both, according to Principal Mary Soloman, are flourishing in school but unless they each find the funds to continue their schooling, their mothers will have no choice but to pull them from school. And, without a proper education, the young girls will grow up with very little hope for a promising future.

I have no doubt that we can help and it’s a privilege to be a part of the solution! Please join us as we work toward building a more just and sustainable world for not only these two young girls but for the entire school community by bringing the world to them.

Be a Webmaster – Engage your Network!

• Host an event where a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Bits for Bytes (anything goes from a shopping event, beer night or haircuts – use your imagination!).
• Go viral – invite your friends & family to become part of our Bits for Bytes family on and spread the word! Use the social networking links  to share the donation page with your friends & family!
• Organize a “Back to School” sale & swap where parents trade outgrown clothes and items for this year’s sizes and supplies. Set prices in advance with proceeds going to Bits for Bytes! Host a book sale at your place of worship or front lawn.
